Women's History Month event

In honor of Women's History Month, guest speaker Bruce Shapiro will present "From Sweatshops to Pesticides: Women and the Muckraking Tradition" at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24 in the Coykendall Science Building Lounge-Room 210. This talk will discuss women as journalistic innovators and define a distinct stream of female muckrakers with roots in social reform movements. His talk will be based on the research for his most recent book, "Shaking the Foundations: 200 Years of Investigative Journalism in America," a collection of excerpts from the work of 21 American journalists. The talk will be cosponsored by the Department of Communication and Media.

Best-selling author speaks on campus

Jonathan Schell, a best-selling author and a visiting professor at Yale University, will speak at New Paltz at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, in the Coykendall Science Building Auditorium. His talk will focus on his new book "The Unconquerable World: Power, Nonviolence and the Will of the People." Schell’s book presents alternatives to current thinking about American foreign policy. Open Information Session: May Commencement ceremony

The campus community is invited to stop by the Terrace Restaurant between noon and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, to find out more about the two commencement ceremonies planned for May 23. Learn about the changes to candidate and guest seating, line of march and where and when receptions will be held. This is an ideal opportunity for individuals interested in marching or marshaling to become familiar with the commencement day events. Alumna to give talk on Medieval history

Dr. Nancy Marino (’71), one of the foremost hispanomedievalists in the United States, and professor of Spanish at Michigan State University will give a talk titled "Isabel I of Castile and the Symbolic Power of Dress" in Lecture Center 102 on Thursday, March 4, at 5 p.m. Marino received her B.A. in Spanish with honors at New Paltz and a Ph. D. in Hispanic language and literature from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1974. She has written extensively on the literature and culture of 15th and 16th-century Spain. Her talk is the inaugural event for the new interdisciplinary minor in Medieval and Early Modern Studies. The event is free and open to the public.
