A classical move: Feltsman steps up
Vladimir Feltsman, the founder and artistic director of PianoSummer at New Paltz Institute/Festival, gave a surprise recital at Carnegie Hall on Jan. 31. Feltsman filled in for Arcadi Volodos, a young Russian pianist who had come down with the flu a week before. Volodos’ program was going to include such Romantic composers as Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Scriabin. Feltsman, however, played a very different program -- Bach during the first half and Chopin after the intermission. Feltsman, a Russian who immigrated to the United States in 1987, studied at the Moscow conservatory under Jacob Flier. Feltsman’s repertoire encompasses music from the Baroque to 20th century composers. He has performed with virtually every major American orchestra, including the New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He is also an accomplished conductor of such orchestras as the Indianapolis Symphony. His discography contains more than 20 recordings including recordings of works of Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt and Brahms. In addition to teaching at SUNY New Paltz, he teaches at Mannes College of Music in New York City. Visit www.newpaltz.edu/piano for more information. |
