Encourage student writersEach spring, the Writing Board sponsors a "Celebration of Writing Day" to recognize outstanding student writing. This year, Celebration of Writing Day will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, April 1. Please encourage your students (present and past) to submit work to the Writing Board for consideration. This is an opportunity for faculty to give a big nudge to any students they think are producing interesting writing. The Writing Board encourages submissions from students in all disciplines, including science, technology, social science, art, history, education or other disciplines where writing provides a necessary analysis tool. The Writing Board welcomes critical reviews of the arts and cultural activity, social and political analysis, news stories, book reviews and science reports. It also welcomes creative fiction, drama and verse. More information about submission procedures will follow soon (the tentative submission deadline is Monday, March 22). Contact Jim Dembowski (Communication Disorders) or Jan Schmidt (English) at x2724 for more information. "Spheres" book review programThis spring, the Kingston Library is offering the faculty at SUNY New Paltz a unique opportunity to showcase their knowledge to the Ulster County community through a new program called "The Spheres of Social Influence Book Review Program." The Spheres of Social Influence is an ongoing book review program where faculty participants can present to the public current ideas and information in areas that affect their everyday lives, such as politics (government) and history, religion/spirituality, economics and business, science and technology, social sciences (sociology, anthropology) education, the humanities, literature, and the arts. This is a great opportunity for faculty to participate in highly visible and valuable outreach to the community. In addition, there is a $100 honorarium per review. Anyone interested in leaning more about, and signing up for, the program should respond to Eric Gullickson (Public Affairs) at gullicke@newpaltz.edu or x3245. Respondents will then be contacted directly by Bruce J. George, the director of the Kingston Library.
