May Commencement volunteers needed: meeting set for March 3

For the first time in the history of May Commencement at New Paltz, graduate and undergraduate candidates will be split into two different ceremonies on May 23, and now, more than ever, volunteers will play an integral part in the success of each of the events.

The graduate ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 11 a.m. The undergraduate ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. and is expected to end at 3 p.m. Due to these changes, the Commencement Office expects candidate participation to increase, and is therefore looking to the campus community to help provide the needed coverage for the specific responsibilities of each ceremony.

In an effort to familiarize interested faculty, staff and students with the new commencement structure, the Commencement Office will hold an open Information Session at the Terrace Restaurant from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3. Attending this Information Session does not obligate a staff member to marshal at commencment. It is intended to inform the campus community of, and spark interest in, the single biggest event we put on on our campus.

Volunteers who wish to marshal will need to register for each ceremony on the Commencement Web site from March 19 through April 23 -- the deadline to have your name appear in either, or both, programs.

It is expected that every school and department on campus will have a number of representatives from their area participate.

Graduation is not only a significant ceremony for students, it is also a recognition of the hard work everyone at the college has done, directly or indirectly, to help each one of our students arrive on the commencement stage.
