Awards, Honors, Appointments, and Recognition

The Selection Committee of the School of Business Hall of Fame has recommended the following individuals to be inducted into the School of Business Hall of Fame on Thursday, May 6, 2004.

Business Person of the Year: Clifford M. Miller. Miller is the president and CEO of Ulster Savings Bank. He is a graduate of Kingston High School and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Economics from Rutgers University, 1964. He received a teaching degree from SUNY New Paltz in 1972. In 1980, he graduated from the National School of Banking at Fairfield University.

Alumna of the Year: Joan Lawrence-Bauer. Lawrence- Bauer is the president of Business Development Group, a small-business consulting firm in Big Indian, NY, and handles business development and communication activities for the Kingston Housing Authority. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (summa cum laude) in public communication from New Paltz (`93) and has completed course work for a Master of Arts degree at the University at Albany.

Student of the Year: Shaun Hoff. Hoff graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Management from New Paltz in 2002. He chose to continue his education at New Paltz and is presently a student in the MBA program, with a concentration in management.

Other Interesting Endeavors

The Engineering Advisory Board met with the engineering faculty at the end of last year to continue planning for the celebration of the 2nd annual National Engineering Week (Feb. 22-28) New Faces of Engineering event. The School of Science and Engineering will host an all-day event on Feb. 25 for middle, high school and college students. This event focuses on the contributions and excitement of the engineering world. There will be booths and many workshops presented by area engineering-related businesses and organizations.

New Faces of Engineering, launched in 2003, underscores the excitement and wonder of engineering.

Presentations & Exhibitions

Narcyz Roztocki (Business) presented and published the paper, “Activity-Based Management for E-Commerce," during the Web 2003 Conference in Seattle, Wash., Dec. 13-14, 2003. Roztocki, also chaired the session titled: “e- Business II.” In addition, Roztocki presented a research paper, titled “The Use of Web-based Surveys for Academic Research: Lessons Learned from the Field,” at the 34th Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., Nov. 22-25.

Diego Dominici (Mathematics) presented the paper, “Asymptotic Analysis of the Krawtchouk Polynomials by the WKB Method,” at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Phoenix, Ariz., Jan. 7-10.

Publications

Baback Izadi (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Fusun Özgüner (Electrical Engineering, Ohio State University) published a paper titled “An Augmented k-ary Tree Multiprocessor with Real-Time Fault-Tolerant Capability” in The Journal of Super-computing, Vol. 27, No. 1, pp. 5-17, January 2004.

Alumni in the News

Jean Roth (Asian Studies `76) After a very interesting journey that took her to Tel Aviv, where she worked for a Japanese-Israeli joint venture firm and later to Los Angeles as a public relations officer in UCLA’s International Studies Department, Roth is now self-employed as a graphic designer, editor and creative communications specialist.

Raminder Bhangoo (Communication & Media `02) recently wrote a book review for Wenshan Jia's course Communication Research Methods in 2002. With Jia's careful critique and advising, Bhangoo’s book review was officially accepted for publication in the Spring 2004 issue of the scholarly journal “The American Review of China Studies.”
