Toni Morrison brings "Love"

Love was everywhere; in fact, it filled the Julien J. Studley Theatre to capacity and spread out into the isles on Nov. 18, when Nobel laureate Toni Morrison visited New Paltz to read an excerpt from her new book, "Love," to more than 700 people in attendance that evening.

After a successful book signing (requiring six pens!), a book raffle was held for the 150 New Paltz students who were admitted to the event at no charge. The copy of "Love" was won by Rebecca Spangler, a freshman from Esopus Hall.

The Office of Public Affairs would like to thank the volunteer ushers, and both William Clark (director of the Campus Media Center) and Christine DeLape (assistant to the dean of Fine and Performing Arts), who helped to make the event such a huge success!

University Police practice Verbal Judo in two-day training program

The New Paltz Police Department and The Verbal Judo Institute hosted a two-day “Verbal Judo” training program last week on the New Paltz campus for area law enforcement organizations.

Mike Manley, national director of the Verbal Judo Institute and retired New York City Police Officer of 25 years, instructed more than 20 law enforcement officers representing agencies from SUNY New Paltz, Village of New Paltz, Saugerties, Ellenville, SUNY Albany, City of Kingston, Town of Ulster and others.

Verbal Judo is the only program in America that teaches tactical communications for the contact professional. It teaches a philosophy of how to look creatively at conflict and use specific strategies and tactics to find peaceful resolutions.

University Police thanks Ralph Perez- Rodgers and Sodexho for generously contributing breakfast and lunch for the program.

Verbal Judo director, Mike Manley, teaches law enforcement officials to diffuse dangerous situations with verbal tactics to find peaceful resolutions.
