May 2004 graduation deadline: Nov. 25

Graduation applications for May 2004 Commencement are due in the Records and Registration Office by Nov. 25. Please remind students that they need to fill out thier applications by this date. For more information, call Bernadette Morris at x3100.

Instructional Media Services (IMS) amps-up instructional resources

Instructional Media Services has installed a new public address system in Lecture Center 100. The equipment features seven wired microphones, one podium microphone, three wireless handheld microphones, and three lavaliere microphones, all made by Sennheiser. This enables the room to be fully covered for classes, conferences and large events.

Additionally, Instructional Media Services announces the completion of four new electronic classrooms. CSB 154, 221, 321 and REH 111 now feature ceiling-mounted LCD data/video projectors, electric screens, network-connected computers and VCR/DVD players. All four rooms have Extron touch control systems for ease of use. Call IMS at x3630 for room reservations and equipment training.

Academic Senate

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Academic Senate will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, in Lecture Center 102. As a reminder, the list of scheduled meetings for the semester is posted on the Web site at www.newpaltz.edu/governance. The agenda and minutes of the last meeting are sent out by e-mail two days in advance of the meeting. For more information contact the Faculty Governance office at x2891 or marcotta@newpaltz.edu.

Annual Student Development Day

The student chapter of the Society for Human Resources will be presenting its second annual Student Development Day from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, in the Student Union Building. Workshops, led by local professionals, will cover topics such as career development, interviewing, developing leadership skills and ethics. Call for nominations

Please submit nominations by Dec. 1 to the Provost's Office (HAB 801) for the 2003-2004 Chancellor's Awards for Excellence and Distinguished Professorships. Nominations emanate from a broad representation of the campus community and are reviewed by the Committee on Research, Awards and Leaves.

Wallyball comes to New Paltz

The first-ever intercollegiate Wallyball Tournament was held on Oct. 4 during Alumni Weekend at SUNY New Paltz. Wallyball is a fast-paced, off-the-wall sport that is basically volleyball played in a racquetball court. The tournament, co-hosted by Ian Walker, head men's volleyball coach at New Paltz and Tony Bonilla, former men's volleyball coach, was the first official wallyball tournament at the collegiate level. Approximately 37 players from the New York/Tri-State area competed in this event, which was sponsored by the Eastern Athletic Club (EAC) and Wallyball International, Inc.

Athletics walks for awareness

A driving rainstorm did not stop nearly 75 student-athletes and their head coaches from supporting a worthwhile cause. On Oct. 19, the SUNY New Paltz Department of Athletics gathered at Woodbury Commons in Woodbury, NY for a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. Members of the women's basketball, cross country, field hockey, soccer, swimming, tennis and volleyball teams endured the elements and raised $3,102.90. The New Paltz Department of Athletics were among the 9,200 walkers who joined together to raise $730,000.

Women’s tennis makes state tournament

For the first time in school history, the SUNY New Paltz women's tennis team will participate in the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Tournament on Oct. 24-26 at the Reis Tennis Center on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. The top 16 Division III women's tennis teams from the State of New York will participate in the event, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the Division III National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament. The Hawks, one of three State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) teams in the NYSWCAA field, finished the season with an 8-2 record and placed second among nine teams at the 2003 SUNYAC Championship. SUNYAC foes Cortland and Geneseo also qualified for the tournament. The six players who will be participating in the NYSWCAA tournament are juniors Kerry Farrell (Rockville Centre, NY), Jessica Smith (Newport News, VA), Amanda Rosario (Bronx, NY), sophomore Sara Goldstein (Merrick, NY), and the Larson sisters, junior Amie and freshman Jen (Port Jervis, NY).
