Open House extends hours:
campus bursting at the seams

The Fall 2003 Open House is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8, and pre-registrations for this year's program are approximately 20 percent ahead of last year.

Fall Open House, November 8, 2003, SUNY New Paltz

This bodes well for New Paltz's growing popularity among collegebound high school students, but does pose some challenges for the campus community relative to managing everincreasing numbers of prospective students and applicants.

As many of you may recall, the numbers of prospective students and family members in attendance last year were very high, estimated to be well over 4,000 people, which approached the upper limit of the campus' capacity.

The most effective approach to managing this is to spread the arrival of visitors out over the course of the day. In order to do so, the Academic Fair (Elting Gymnasium) and the Student Services Fair (MPR) will need to be extended by a few hours and the number of periodic tours of the campus, residence halls and academic areas must be increased in frequency. This will allow the undergraduate admissions office to communicate with registered participants in order to encourage them to arrive on campus at various times throughout the day.

Specifically, the ending times of the academic fair and the Student Services Fair will be extended to 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. Essentially, the day will be extended by about two hours. Admissions staff will work with departments to coordinate the change in schedule for the day.

The Undergraduate Admissions office recognizes that it is asking people to put in more effort and hours than in the past, and is ultimately asking people to make personal sacrifices on behalf of the campus community.

Your time is valuable and this change is only being made to ensure that the program is as successful as possible. As a potential future tradeoff, if recruitment volume continues at this pace, the Spring Open House for accepted students may not be conducted this year.

One final thought: we are faced with this challenge because we are successful. We are popular because we are good at what we do.
