"Feminism and Social Action"The Women's Studies Program will host an all-day conference titled "Feminism and Social Action," Saturday, Oct. 18, on the campus in New Paltz. This year's conference will explore contemporary feminism and its connections with other movements of social justice. The conference will present a keynote panel consisting of three politically active women -- Nancy Naples, Julia Walsh and Cynthia McKinney -- as well as an evening performance by Reno. Conference encourages diverse voicesNew Paltz will host the ninth annual Multicultural Education Conference titled "Encouraging Diverse Voices: Creating Space for all Through Multicultural Education," from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 30, in the Student Union Building. This year’s conference focuses on ways to make schools safer for differences -- whether cultural or opinion. Keynote speaker Tom Roderick, the executive director of Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR), Metro Area, will describe how courageous, imaginative teachers are keeping faith with their calling on these challenging times in his presentation, titled "Making Our School Safe for Democracy." There will also be an afternoon performance by the Flight Dance Company, titled "And That is What I Dreamt. . .," an original theatrical drama to prevent school violence and bullying. The registration deadline for the conference is Oct. 20 and workshops will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Assessing assessmentThe faculty and professional staff will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, in Lecture Center 102. There will be a discussion of the imposition of SUNY-wide assessment of general education and time to formulate a response. Refreshments will be served in the lobby beginning at 2:30 p.m..
