SEFA Campaign
The State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA) Campaign is a charitable giving campaign directed and implemented by state employees and managed by the United Way. The goal of the 1998 SEFA Campaign, which extends from November 16 to 27, is to top last year's total SUNY contribution of $1.6 million. At the campaign's kickoff breakfast at State University System Administration in Albany, State University Chancellor John W. Ryan said, "What makes SEFA so special is the number of lives it touches." More than 3,600 charitable organizations may be designated for SEFA contributions, giving employees the maximum degree of choice. Payroll contributions have the added benefit of providing organizations with quarterly donations throughout the year rather than all at once. For an idea of the impact of your contributions, consider the following: $10 per pay period sends a disadvantaged child to summer camp at the "Y" for two weeks and pays for 10 hours of personalized SAT preparation for a college-bound student; $5 per pay period covers a life-saving dialysis treatment for someone suffering from kidney disease and three hours of therapy for an abused child; $2.50 per pay period provides a hot meal to 40 people who are hungry and homeless and eight hours of care for an Alzheimer's patient. Pledge forms and SEFA booklets listing participating organizations will be available through department secretaries beginning November 16. Please return them, along with donations, to Lorraine DuBois (Purchasing) in HAB 307, and call Pat DeWitt (Physical Plant) at x2776 for additional information. All those who make pledge donations will be included in a raffle for prizes including dinners, lunches and other free services.

Breaking the ground
According to Patricia Phillips (Fine & Performing Arts), "The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art will be a magnet creating new partnerships between the intellectual and artistic communities of the College and the region." A ceremony to officially break the ground where the expanded museum will stand begins at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18 on the East Patio of the College Art Gallery. Named for philanthropist and long-time friend of the College Art Gallery whose lead gift made possible its development, this new museum will be the second largest within the SUNY system, nearly 11,000 square feet. Opening remarks by President Roger Bowen and the prescribed penetration of ground by shovel will be followed by a reception and press conference in Chandler Gallery. Brief speeches by Phillips, Congressman Maurice Hinchey and the late Samuel Dorsky's son, David, will precede a virtual tour (photo below) of the new museum to be conducted by its director, Neil Trager. The ceremony's keynote address tracing the origin of the modern museum, titled "Wonder and the Jurassic: Toward a Natural History of Amazement," will be delivered by Lawrence Weschler at 5 p.m. in LC 112. A staff writer for The New Yorker, Weschler is also the author of several books, most recently Mr. Wilson's Cabinet of Wonder, a 1997 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He is a two-time winner of the George Polk Award and a former Guggenheim Fellow. This event has been co-sponsored by the School of Fine & Performing Arts, the Hudson Valley Study Center, the College at New Paltz Foundation Inc. and the College Art Gallery.

Of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art
A major component of the program for the expanded museum's main gallery is the exhibition of works from the College's permanent collection of historical and contemporary regional art. "There is an important artistic heritage in the mid-Hudson Valley, and I think it's important that a major institution address that legacy," said Trager. Two new galleries, a Teaching Gallery and a Special Collections Gallery, will be used primarily to exhibit objects from the College's world study collection of approximately 3,000 works of art, including pieces dating back to 2000 B.C. The College's two existing art galleries, Chandler and North, have historically been the site of temporary exhibitions. This will not change; however, a focus on exhibiting modern and contemporary works in those galleries may be observed.

 


Awards, Honors, and Recognition

Ellen Abate (Nursing) has completed all requirements for a doctorate at Teacher's College, Columbia University and has been promoted to an assistant professor in SUNY New Paltz's Department of Nursing.

Myra Mimlitsch Gray (Art) designed the prototype for the bronze President's Medal given to Louis and Mildred Resnick at the dedication of the new engineering hall that bears their names. The medal's design incorporates aspects of both traditional and contemporary commemorative objects, featuring as its central elements an open book and a naturalistic carving of the New Paltz landscape. The prototype was chased and fabricated directly in copper; then a silicone mold was made to replicate the design in bronze.

 


Presentations/Exhibitions

The New York Conference on Asian Studies included presentations by the following: Karin Andriolo (Anthropology), President Roger Bowen, Victor deMunck (Anthropology), Kristine Harris (History), David Krikun (History), Loyd Lee (History), Alfred Marks (English emeritus), Tulin Sener (Business Administration), Anne Shibata (Communication & Media) and Michael Whelan (Secondary Education). Honors are also extended to all those whose contributions of effort, time and funds made NYCAS '98, hosted by SUNY New Paltz, a considerable success.

Steve Bradford (Art) participated in a group exhibition of ceramic installations, "Clay on the Fringe," held at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia.

Ann Lovett and Francois Deschamps (both Art) with Art alumna Judith Mohns (Class of '86) participated in an exhibition titled "Into Focus/Art on Science," held in Mandeville Gallery at Union College in Schenectady.

 


Alumni in the news

Bruce Bleach (MFA/Printmaking, 1974) and Hee Sun Suh (MFA/Printmaking, 1995), prints on paper included in an exhibition at the Watermark/Cargo Gallery in Kingston.

In-Sun Choi and Cynthia Dill (both MFA/Painting, 1997), a two-person show at Unison Gallery in New Paltz. Additionally, Choi participated in a two-person show at the Watermark/Cargo Gallery in Kingston.

Emily Curtis (BA/Liberal Arts and Women's Studies, 1994) is a singer/songwriter and has produced a CD titled Radiate, a collection of alternative/pop music available locally at Jack's Rhythms and Rhino Records. She created the CD's record label, Funfer Records, a vendor at this year's Women's Studies Fall Conference.

Tracy Spadafora (MFA/Painting, 1995), a solo exhibition at the Holzwasser Gallery, Newton Art Center in Newtonsville, Massachusetts.

 


Students in the news

Carrie Holmes-Seares is the recipient of one of this year's Eugene P. Link scholarships. A Political Science major and a senior in the Honors Program, Seares stated that she was motivated to become a union activist after two summer internships with UNITE! Her work includes union and student campaigns, citizenship and voting drives, and political training sessions for union members. She seeks the support of her classmates in an upcoming campaign, "Stop Sweatshops on Campus," to convince College administrators to stop dealing with apparel manufacturers who use sweatshop labor. United University Professionals established the Link scholarship program in 1985 as a testimonial to founding member and history professor Eugene P. Link. It is given to three SUNY students per year.
