Shafiul Chowdhury (Geology) has been appointed as the new director of the college's Environmental Geochemical Sciences Program. The program is an interdisciplinary effort between the biology, chemistry and geology departments to prepare students for careers in the environmental sciences. Chowdhury succeeds founding director Alvin Konigsberg (Geology), who will be on sabbatical leave for the 2007-2008 academic year. Kathleen Kraus retired as dean of Continuing and Professional Education on Aug. 17. Kraus worked for the college for more than 22 years. A reception will be held in her honor from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 29 in the College Terrace. Helise Winters has been promoted from her position as associate dean of the department and succeeds Kraus as the new dean.


Kristine Harris (History, Asian Studies) was visiting associate professor in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago for the spring 2007 semester. She taught undergraduate and graduate level Chinese film history and participated in the college's Mass Culture Workshop. Harris presented a paper on the topic of the city in early Chinese cinema at the Chicago Film Seminar. She also presented new research on early metafilms at the Institut d'Asie Orientale in Lyon, France.


Lauren Guido '07 (Marketing, Management) received the 2007- 2008 Human Resource Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship. The $700 scholarship was established in 2006 by the Mid-Hudson Human Resources Association to recognize and encourage New Paltz students who are interested in pursuing a career in the field of human resources.
