Award-winning journalist to share visions with students and public at Media Day 2006

Kevin Sites, journalist and creator of Yahoo! News’ "Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone," will be the keynote speaker at the college's fifth annual Media Day on Friday, April 21.

The event, which is sponsored by the Department of Communication and Media and The Legislative Gazette, is free and open to the public.

Sites, recipient of the 2006 Daniel Pearl Award for courage and integrity in journalism, will begin his presentation at 7:30 p.m. in Lecture Center 100, followed by a panel discussion on the topic, “Media in Conflict: Are We Getting The Real Story?”

Joining Sites for the discussion will be Congressman Maurice Hinchey '68, '70g, a founding member and chair of Future of American Media Congressional Caucus;

Ann Cooper, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists and Ottaway Professor of Journalism at New Paltz; Don Torrance, associate professor at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University; and College President Steven Poskanzer. The moderator will be Bruno Battistoli '03 (Journalism), chair of the Department of Communication and Media advisory board.

Sites’ reporting is described on the Hot Zone Web site ( as “news reporting for the new millennium – a nexus of backpack journalism, narrative story-telling techniques and the Internet, designed to reach a global audience hungry for information.”

Sites has covered major global conflict in areas such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Somalia.
