Foundation and students collaborate to create first-ever peer scholarship

Extreme New Paltz

The SUNY New Paltz Foundation is working with the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), as well as the Student Association and several other student organizations on campus, to hold the first annual “Extreme New Paltz” fundraising series of events.

The 2005-2006 student giving campaign will raise money for a peer scholarship to be awarded in May 2006 and will include a series of fundraising activities by three Extreme teams during the spring semester. There will be two student teams and one faculty and staff team, each with 15 Extreme competitors. The teams will compete against each other in events such as a triathlon, a field day and an obstacle course.

In addition to competing during Extreme events, the three teams will be competing to raise the most money toward a peer scholarship through sponsorship and other activities during the spring semester.

Liz Cavallaro ’06, chair of the Extreme New Paltz committee, said that she hopes to create a cause where every student, and every part of campus can come together to give something back.

“ I think that an event like this has the potential to create a lot of school spirit and bring people together for that shared goal,” said Cavallaro.

Competitors and volunteers needed:
The organizers are still looking for a few professors, professional staff and classified employees to consider competing on a team. In addition to Extreme competitors, the Foundation will need volunteers to serve as referees and other game officials.

Extreme competitions begin at 4 p.m., Friday, April 28, with the triathlon at the Elting Gym. Extreme events continue at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 5, with the field day in the Student Union Building Concourse/Parker Quad. This event includes competitions such as: tug-of-war; three-legged race; extreme giant bocce-ball tournament; pieeating contest; mini Jeopardy match and more. Then, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, there will be an obstacle course challenge, where competitors will race to finish and test their knowledge with trivia and brain-teaser puzzles.

If you are interested in a “little friendly competition,” contact: Doug Pasquerella (Athletics, Basketball) at x3917 or pasquerd@newpaltz.edu; Ian Walker (Athletics, Volleyball) at x3916 or walkeri@newpaltz.edu; or Lucia Mallardi (Director of Annual Giving) at x3239 or mallardl@newpaltz.edu

Look for the first event related to Extreme New Paltz this Wednesday, March 1, beginning at 11:30 a.m. between the Student Union and Haggerty Administration, where students and faculty will gather for a pep rally to raise event awareness.
