SUNY-Turkey exchange program recognized for best practices

The State University of New York's dualdiploma program model with Turkey was selected by the Institute of International Education to receive the Andrew Heiskell Award for International Exchange Partnerships for 2006-2007.

New Paltz, one of seven SUNY institutions involved in the model program, will be recognized for its innovative collaboration with the Turkish Higher Education Council (YÖK) at the awards presentation in New York on March 30, in conjunction with the second annual IIE Best Practices Conference and special awards luncheon at the United Nations Delegates Dining Room.

Representatives from New Paltz will make a presentation at the event. The program will be featured by the IIE Network as a “best practice” in international education.

SUNY's dual-diploma program won the award that recognizes institutions for developing innovative and effective collaborative programs with counterparts abroad.

SUNY-Turkey exchange program recognized Kathleen Bauman Geher, campus coordinator of the SUNYYÖK Dual Diploma Program, said that last May, New Paltz had the first six students graduate from the program model and four of the six students graduated with honors.

“Given the structure of the program and the accelerated time line, this accomplishment is particularly noteworthy,” said Geher. “We also host a large number of students – 103 last summer and perhaps up to 175 this summer, which speaks to the popularity of the programs at New Paltz.”

Last year, more than 330 Turkish students were enrolled at seven SUNY institutions: Binghamton, Buffalo, Cortland, New Paltz, Maritime, Fashion Institute of Technology and Empire State College. New programs have enrolled students in Turkey and will see students arriving over the next few years at the colleges at Brockport, Fredonia, Geneseo and Purchase.

The Heiskell awards are named for the late Andrew Heiskell, a former chairman of Time Inc., who served on the IIE board of directors. He was a renowned philanthropist and a passionate supporter of international education. The awards were created to promote and honor the most outstanding initiatives that are being conducted in international higher education by IIE Network member universities and colleges.
