SUNY New Paltz to Host Science Expo

03/19/1998

NEW PALTZ -- More than 100 teachers from the mid-Hudson region are expected to attend a Science Teaching Expo, the Spring Conference of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS), Southeast Section, hosted by the School of Education at the State University of New York at New Paltz on Saturday, March 21.

The keynote address, "Clearwater: Setting Sail to Restore a River," will be delivered by Steve Stanne, the education director of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. Workshop sessions, which will be held during the morning and afternoon, will be targeted for elementary, middle and high school teachers in everything from physical and general science topics to biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry and astronomy.

Workshop sessions will be taught by area teachers, SUNY New Paltz faculty, and individuals representing several other institutions.

Stanne has been with the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. since 1980. As education director he oversees the organization's environmental education programs for school audiences and the general public. As part of his job, he teaches a graduate level education course in Hudson River Studies at SUNY New Paltz. He also produces curriculum materials and assists with the production of festivals and other major events sponsored by Clearwater.

On-site registration for the Science Teaching Expo is available; fees are $10 for members of STANYS and $13 for non-members. The program, which will take place in the Lecture Center, is open to everyone. For additional information, contact Richard Reif, associate dean, School of Education at SUNY New Paltz at 257-2800.
