SUNY New Paltz to hold IEEE workshop on information security and disaster recovery
NEW PALTZ -- The State University of New York at New Paltz will host the Mid-Hudson section's Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) workshop on information security and disaster recovery from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 21, at the Terrace Restaurant on the New Paltz campus.
The workshop will concentrate on the need to safeguard critical business and personal data from a variety of potential threats, including natural disasters, computer hacking and terrorism, as well as the important role of technology in responding to such disasters.
"This is a particularly relevant conference in light of recent events," said Dr. John Harrington, dean of the School of Science and Engineering. "The nature of the protection of information is an essential requirement."
Harrington will begin the workshop with opening remarks from Rob Atkins, vice-chair of the Mid-Hudson section of the IEEE, and the workshop organizing committee.
Throughout the day, speakers from IBM, the U.S. Military Academy, Central Hudson and SUNY New Paltz will discuss topics from cybersecurity and information assurance to modeling and continuity assurance for the Mid-Hudson Valley electric power grid, culminating in a panel discussion on future trends in security and disaster recovery at 2:30 p.m.
Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with guest speakers during informal discussion breaks throughout the day, and a question/answer session will be held at the end of the panel discussion to assess those attendees wishing to apply for continuing education units under the New York State Professional Engineers Program.
This event is open to the public. Registration is $20 per person, or free with a valid student ID, and includes the workshop, coffee, a buffet lunch and a CD ROM with presentation materials and invited papers.
