Summit of the International Evolutionary Studies Consortium to be held at New Paltz on Oct. 26

NEW PALTZ – The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz will host a summit conference of the International Evolutionary Studies (EvoS) Consortium on Friday, Oct. 26. The theme of the conference is “Expanding Darwin’s Reach across the Ivory Archipelago.” It will begin in the Lecture Center Lobby and sessions will take place in various locations on campus from 9:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
The conference will highlight the progress of EvoS-related initiatives and will help mobilize scholars to foster EvoS within the confines of higher education in the future. It will include some of the world’s leading minds on the topic of evolution education. Attendance at this event will count as professional-development experience for NY State teachers via the Mid-Hudson Teacher Center.
A keynote address titled, “Evolutionary Medicine – Interdisciplinary Evolutionary Studies in Action,” will be presented by Gordon Gallup of SUNY Albany. A capstone address titled, “EvoS, the Binghamton Neighborhood Project, and the Future of Evolution in Higher Education,” will be presented by David Sloan Wilson of SUNY Binghamton.
Registration is free for students with student ID; $40 for non-students, and $30 for NY State Teachers registered with Mid-Hudson Teacher Center for Professional Development Credit. EvoS is designed to facilitate the development and implementation of evolutionary studies programs at colleges and universities across the U.S. Evolutionary studies programs introduce students from all majors to evolutionary theory early in their academic careers, emphasize human-related subjects in addition to biological, promote the continuation of evolutionary training throughout the undergraduate education, and promote faculty training and collaborative research related to evolution.
