Students receive Superior Merit Award

NEW PALTZ -- The State University of New York at New Paltz student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has earned the Superior Merit Award for the 2002-2003 academic year by the Society for Human Resource Management, the world's largest association devoted to human resource management.
"The students worked very hard this year, and are certainly deserving of the award," said chapter advisor, Professor Kristin Backhaus. "Winning a Superior Merit Award places New Paltz in the top 25 percent of all active student chapters nationwide, which is an impressive accomplishment to potential employers."
As part of its mission, the student chapter provides opportunities for growth and development to its members as well as the entire student body. In the fall and spring semesters, Merit Award applications are sent to each SHRM chapter advisor. The application can be used as a tool for planning activities throughout the year. Examples of activities that the New Paltz SHRM provides include: hosting speakers, holding meetings, electing officers, attending conferences, touring companies and developing chapter goals. With the application process, there are a total of 3250 possible points, and chapters must earn just 51percent, or 1650 points to qualify for Merit Award recognition. The SUNY New Paltz chapter received 2,270 points.
"Once again our students have demonstrated their excellence," said School of Business Dean Hadi Salavitabar. "While I am very pleased with this award, I am more pleased with the quality of programs the students have brought into the School of Business."
The student chapter of SHRM has 40 active members under the leadership of Shaun Hoff, an MBA candidate. In its first year, this student chapter has gained national recognition.
