Career History

Dr. Maria Montserrat Gimeno is an Assistant Professor in the Music Therapy Program at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She was born in Barcelona, Spain, where worked as a nurse for several years. She came to the states on 1993, since then she completed a bachelor degree in music therapy at Willamette University, Salem, OR., a master’s degree in music therapy and a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. Dr. Gimeno is a licensed creative art therapist and a board certified music therapist. She is also trained in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. Dr. Gimeno is known nationally and internationally for her research on the use of Music and Imagery (MI) in medical settings and has taught MI courses in the United States, China, Spain, and Finland. She volunteers at a local hospital using the MI technique to help patients in the oncology support center.

Research/Creative Activity

Dr. Gimeno is known nationally and internationally for her research on the use of Music and Imagery (MI) in medical settings and has taught MI courses in the United States, China, Spain, and Finland. She volunteers at a local hospital using the MI technique to help patients in the oncology support center. At the present she has submitted a proposal to the HREB to do a research study at the Health Alliance of the Hudson Valley on: "The Effect of Music Induced Relaxation (MIR) on Anxiety of Orthopedic Surgical Patients".

Awards, Honors & Recognition

Dr. Gimeno has been awarded with a pre-tenure leave to do a research at the AIMS hospital in Cochin, India during Spring 2015. She has been honored as volunteer of the year at Benedictine Hospital on January 2013 and has earned several awards from UUP Individual Development. Dr. Gimeno is a member of the American Music Therapy Association and the American Music and Imagery Association. She has published in Spain and the USA.
