Dr. Kern is a board certified music therapist in Germany, Canada, and the United States. She received her doctorate in Music Therapy from the School of Medicine at the University of Witten-Herdecke. She earned her Sozialpädagogig degree at the University of Applied Sciences, Würzburg-Schweinfurt in Germany. Her research focus is early childhood, inclusion, autism spectrum disorders, and visual impairments. She is also interested in providing music therapy services in children's natural environments such as playgrounds. Her work has been published in Young Exceptional Children, Young Children, the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, the Journal of Music Therapy, Music Therapy Perspectives, and Music Therapy Today.
Dr. Kern serves on several national and international music therapy committees and boards, including the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT), American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), Canadian Association of Music Therapy (CAMT), and German Trade Federation of Music Therapy (BVM). She serves as a member of the Board of Editors of Music Therapy Perspectives, the Canadian Journal of Music Therapy, and Music Therapy Today. Dr. Kern is the Secretary/Treasurer of the WFMT and chairs the AMTA Student Affairs Advisory Board (SAAB). She is the editor of AMTA's Early Childhood Newsletter and co-chairs the AMTA Early Childhood Network.
