Rafael Tufiño was born in 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, but moved with his family to San Juan, Puerto Rico, while still young. He studied drawing and painting at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City and returned to Puerto Rico in 1950, taking up work at the Taller de Gráfica of the División de Educación. In the same year, along with Carlos Raquel Rivera and Lorenzo Homar, among others, he co-founded the Centro de Arte Puertorriqueõ in San Juan. In 1957 he began his association with the Taller de Gráfica of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueã. Tufño maintains his own workshop in San Juan.
