José Rosa Castellanos was born in 1939 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He studied painting and drawing under Domingo Garcia at the Taller-Galería Campeche and in 1966 became an apprentice to Lorenzo Homar at the Taller de Gráfica of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña. He stayed at the Taller as a graphic designer and in 1973 was named director, succeding Homar, a position that he held until the closing of the Taller of the Instituto in 1986.
