This building originally served as the Campus Practice School. It was named for Lawrence H. van den Berg, the last principal of the New Paltz Normal School and the first president of the State Teacher's College at New Paltz from 1923 to 1943. The clock tower you see on top of the building was installed in January 2005. It replaced the original tower that was built in 1932 and destroyed by a fire in 1990. The new tower has a five-foot diameter clock face on four sides and chimes throughout the day. It also includes a spire and many of the decorative elements found on the original tower, such as pilasters, columns, cornices and urns. The School of Business is now housed in van den Berg Hall. The van den Berg Annex (47), connected behind the building, houses the English as a Second Language and Institute for International Business programs.
