Visitor Spending

Visitors of New Paltz students spent $3.8 million on lodging, meals, recreation, transportation, retail, and other goods and services. These expenditures promoted an economic and employment impact of $7.19 million in the Hudson Valley and $7.6 million in New York State. According to the Ulster County Tourism office, the average overnight visitor spends $144/ person/day, while day visitors average $67.50/day.

  • 22,589 (overnight visitors)
  • 35,373 (overnights)
  • 39,862 (day visitors)

2008-2009 Academic Year

  • 59,086 visitors attended events and venues (e.g. Reunion Weekend, Parents Weekend, Dorsky Museum,
    theatre and music performances, Distinguished Speaker Series, Commencement, Orientation, athletic events, summer camps, community sports events). This does not include uncounted visitors to the Sojourner Truth Library, or engineering and science events.
  • 22,463 registered visitors (New Paltz’s Admissions Office), which includes prospective students/ families attending Fall Open House and Accepted Students’ Day, as well as group visits.

Note: The aforementioned visitors were not included in spending calculations, as there is no information regarding the types of visitor or their length of stay. Students are included in students spending, and faculty/staff are included in employee spending.
