Course Descriptions

Elementary 1
Basic grammatical structure of the language emphasizing practical vocabulary, everyday situations, and cultural insights through extensive conversational exchange.

Elementary 2
Further development of conversational ability and cultural insights. Includes practice in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding.

Intermediate 1
A rapid review of the basic grammatical structure coordinated with cultural background serves as a basis for more advanced conversational exchange. In most languages, additional practice in reading and writing activities.

Intermediate 2
Development of more advanced conversational skills enabling participants to create practical, everyday situations in the target language. In most languages, reading and writing, coordinated with classroom activities.

Composition & Conversation (Advanced) 1
Intensive practice in composition and conversation, emphasizing the acquisition of written and oral fluency through vocabulary building.

Composition & Conversation (Advanced) 2
Additional practice in composition and conversation, emphasizing the acquisition of written and oral fluency through vocabulary building.

Each course consists of 50 contact hours and is equivalent to one semester of college work.

Two week programs may not be used toward the fulfillment of the General Education requirements at SUNY New Paltz. Students outside SUNY New Paltz should consult their foreign language departments or academic advisors.
