International Student Services: Current Students

Extension of Stay to Continue in the Haggerty English Language Program

F-1 students in the Haggerty English Language Program are usually given an I-20 for one year. Check the program end date on your I-20 (page 1 number 5). On that date, your I-20 and your F-1 status finish. If you want to study longer in the Haggerty English Language Program, or you would like to apply for an academic program, but are not sure when that will begin, you should make an appointment to talk to the International Student Adviser (call 845-257-3595). The International Student Adviser might tell you to apply for an extension of your I-20.

How do I apply for an extension of my I-20?

  1. Am I eligible?
    • Are you in lawful F-1 status under the visa supervision of SUNY New Paltz?
    • Have you registered full time every semester that you were in F-1 status in the Haggerty English Language Program?
    • Have you spoken to the Coordinator of the Haggerty English Language Program? Did the coordinator allow you to study longer in the program?
  2. When must I apply?
You must give your documents to the International Student Adviser at the Center for International Programs before the program end date on your I-20.
  3. How do I apply?
Make an appointment to see the International Student Adviser and bring the following with you:
    • Your current I-20, all previously issued I-20s, your passport and I-94 card.
    • Financial documentation dated within the past 3 months to cover the costs of the additional time needed to complete your program. The International Student Adviser will review your application for eligibility and prepare a new I-20 for extension of stay. We will contact you when your I-20 is ready.

What happens if I don't extend my I-20 before the program end date?

If you want to study at the Haggerty English Language Program or in an Academic Program at SUNY New Paltz, you must apply for reinstatement. Reinstatement is difficult and expensive and may take many months before it is approved.

If you want to transfer to a different school, that must be done no more than 60 days after your program end date on your I-20. If you do not want to study, but plan to leave the US, you are allowed to stay in the US for no more than 60 days after the program end date on your I-20.

Please contact the International Student Adviser if you have any questions.
