Classrooms with Installed Technology

Smart Classrooms put technology within your easy reach. These rooms make the learning experience more enjoyable for both faculty and students. In them, faculty can project many types of images onto a large screen. For instance,

  • you can project a computer image: an Internet Web site, Blackboard page, PowerPoint presentation, digitally scanned slides or any other computer document, file or program.
  • you can project an image from your laptop computer.
  • you can play a DVD or VHS videotape.
  • if your room contains a document camera, you can project an image from a book, paper, transparency or three-dimensional object. Some models of document cameras have the ability to capture or freeze images, or read information off a memory card or flash drive.
  • if your room contains an interactive whiteboard, you can use it to annotate projected information, or use it as a whiteboard with capture features.

Over fifty percent of all classrooms on campus have permanently installed technology. Faculty members may request a smart classroom when their courses require them to use large amounts of video, computer or Internet access on a regular basis. See your department chair if you are interested in teaching in a smart classroom.

Most smart rooms at SUNY New Paltz contain an instructor's station with computer connected to the network. Rooms will have a ceiling-mounted data/video projector or interactive whiteboard, sound system, document camera, electric screen, control system and connection for laptop.  Some rooms also contain a DVD/VCR.

Training and assistance is always available. Call Diane at x3633 days or Casey at x3639 evenings to schedule a 10 minute training session.  Our training sessions are on an individual basis and will thoroughly acquaint you with the technology available in your room.
