BUILDING A WRITING PRACTICE:
An HVWP Open Course for Teachers

Do you wonder how to bring more real writing into the lives of your students? Are you trying to break out the essay cycle but are unsure where to start?

The Hudson Valley Writing Project, in collaboration with Ulster BOCES Instructional Services, offers BUILDING A WRITING PRACTICE, an inservice  course for teachers of grades 5-12 who would like to expand the kinds of writing that students do, vary students’ purposes for writing, and give students opportunities for sharing their work with multiple audiences.

By practicing our own writing, we will explore the writing process as well as how to manage the logistics of process instruction. We will consider the writing process in light of state assessments and we will discuss ways to incorporate writing across the curriculum. BUILDING A WRITING PRACTICE will be led by HVWP teacher consultants and run in a workshop format so that participants will write, revise, confer, and edit their work. Throughout the course, reflective time will be built in to deepen participants’ understanding of themselves as writers and teachers of writing.
