AT ULSTER BOCES CONFERENCE CENTER

Writing Across the Curriculum
Strategies for Understanding Content

HVWP, in collaboration with Ulster County BOCES Instructional Services, will offer a full-day conference on Writing Across the Curriculum facilitated by noted author and science educator John Dorroh from the Mississippi State University Writing/Thinking Project.

Do you ever wonder how to do the “literacy” part of your teaching?
Do you wonder how to “push” students to read and engage with challenging texts? Do you wonder how to help them develop more sophisticated understandings of discipline specific concepts and materials?

In his keynote presentation, John Dorroh will provide practical, classroom-tested strategies for guiding young learners in tackling difficult content through writing. In follow-up sessions, Dorroh and HVWP teacher consultants will lead experiential workshops to support participants interested in learning how to incorporate writing instruction within the math, science, and social studies classrooms.

Session Two Workshops:

TANGLED UP IN THE PAST: Merging Literacy and Social Studies
Trace Schillinger, Poughkeepsie Day School

MATH: Do We Teach Concepts or Vocabulary? Yes, and Writing Too
Tim Dewar, SUNY New Paltz

WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM: Invitation to an Experiment
John Dorroh, Mississippi State University Writing/Thinking Project

Throughout the program, participants will have the opportunity to write, reflect on their teaching practice and experience hands-on teaching workshops. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
