BEYOND BELLS AND WHISTLES: Technology and Writing in the
21st Century Classroom
Without question, our notion of what it means to be literate is constantly changing, and teachers, administrators and parents wonder how best to teach writing in the digital age.
This special HVWP conference is designed for teachers who would like to incorporate more writing and new technologies into their classroom practice. The program will feature a keynote address, FROM SCHOOL TO SCREEN: Why Digital Writing Matters, by noted educator and author Troy Hicks. Participants will consider teaching practices that hold promise as we develop understandings of what it means to write digitally, create spaces for digital writing in our schools, and extend assessment practices that account for the complexities of writing in a digital world.
Following the keynote session, HVWP teachers will lead breakout workshops sharing the ways they have incorporated digital writing into English language arts and content area classrooms. Through reflection and discussion, we will examine ways technology can help teachers motivate and inspire student writing and higher order thinking, while successfully addressing learning standards.
ABOUT THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Dr. Troy Hicks is an assistant professor of English at Central Michigan University and Director of the Chippewa River Writing Project. Troy frequently conducts professional development workshops related to writing and technology and he is the author of The Digital Writing Workshop (2009) and a co-author of Because Digital Writing Matters (2010).
