PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS

HVWP works in consultation with school administrators and faculty to design inservice series that are responsive to the strengths and needs of teachers and school communities. Our programs provide opportunities for sustained learning over time.

HVWP's Inservice Program offers:

  • Practical workshops: research-based, classroom-tested activities
  • Study group discussions of recent educational research
  • Inspiration and support for teachers as writers

Presenters are experienced classroom teachers and SUNY New Paltz faculty who have participated in the HVWP Summer Institute and studied current research in the field of literacy instruction. These teacher consultants lead hands-on and participatory demonstrations that encourage and improve student literacy—reading, writing, technology, and thinking skills.

Workshop topics include:

  • Building a Writing Practice: From First Draft to Publication
  • Digital Storytelling
  • Supporting Emergent Writers
  • Teaching Writing to English Language Learners
  • Integrating Non-fiction Writing into the Everyday Classroom
  • Writing in the Science Classroom
  • Reading/Writing Connections
  • Improving Reading Comprehension
  • Writing Across the Curriculum
