Duties: The Department of Geological Sciences at the State University of New York at New Paltz is seeking applications for a full-time appointment to begin Spring 2013.

Duties: The responsibilities associated with this position will be split into teaching (60%) and support of field excursions (40%). This is a non-tenure-track, 10-month position to begin in January 2013, with the possibility of obtaining additional salary for teaching a summer course.

Teaching responsibilities will include a total of six undergraduate lecture and/or laboratory sections during the academic year for courses including Physical Geology. Other teaching responsibilities such as Historical Geology and upper division geology lectures or labs will be assigned depending on departmental needs. The field coordinator responsibilities will include logistical planning of field excursions, in-field support such as camp set-up and take-down, coordinating meals and driving university vehicles to transport students on department trips. Depending on the semester, the department runs one or more field exercises each week, as well as weekend and extended multi-day camping trips. The department currently has six tenured or tenure-track faculty, an instructional support technician and a secretary. We are a cohesive group who emphasize faculty/student interaction and out-of-classroom learning experiences.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a graduate degree with some teaching experience, preferably at the college level. The successful candidate must have a solid background in geology with a strong field-based component. Experience with a summer geology field camp, field-based geologic work and experience in leading field excursions is highly desirable. Candidates who bring diverse cultural experience and who are especially qualified to mentor and advise all members of our diverse student population are especially encouraged to apply.
