Duties: Full time tenure-track position, typical teaching load of 18 credits (6 courses) per academic year. The faculty member will be expected to establish a strong program of creative and scholarly work, to advise students, and to contribute to the life and work of the department and college. Active scholarship, committed teaching, and service on standing department and college committees is expected and required for tenure. Potential future leadership opportunities include the Art Department Chair position, which is filled by qualified tenured faculty on a three-year rotation basis.
Qualifications: MFA required, preferably in graphic or communication
design; significant demonstrated expertise in visual systems, typography, concept development, and design problem-solving for print and/or screen-based media. Critical and conceptual awareness, strong formal vocabulary, and engagement with materials, processes, and range of 2D, 3D and time-based media. Applicants should be conversant with design history, theory, and criticism; contemporary art and design discourse; and show strengths in the field through published work and/or other evidence of relevant scholarship. Professional design experience and college-level teaching preferred.
The candidate must be able to develop curricula and teach courses in both the Graphic Design and Foundations programs. Successful candidates are able to develop and deliver both relevant Foundation pedagogy to first-year students (whose eventual practices may be in diverse areas of art and design) and upper division coursework in Graphic Design.

SUNY New Paltz enjoys a reputation as a highly selective mid-sized public institution with a broad liberal arts curriculum. The campus is situated in the scenic Hudson River Valley, 90 miles north of NYC. The Art Department has extensive facilities in three buildings and is comprised of seven professional studio disciplines: Ceramics, Graphic Design, Metal, Painting and Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture, as well as Foundation and Art Education programs. The School of Fine and Performing Arts also includes Art History, Music, Theater Arts, and the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art.
