Duties: The Art Department at SUNY New Paltz seeks a dynamic scholar to teach courses in critical theory and discourse, to coordinate the MFA program with faculty and students; to serve as academic advisor for MFA students; to oversee staffing in special topics courses related to art theory and criticism; to participate in interdisciplinary curricular development at the graduate and Senior capstone level. The start date for the position is mid-August, 2010.

Full-time, tenure-track position, typical teaching load of 18 credits (6 courses) per academic year with a 2-course release for Coordinator duties. The faculty member will be expected to establish a strong program of creative and scholarly work, to advise students, and to contribute to the life and work of the department and the college.

As Graduate Coordinator the successful candidate represents the Art Department on the University’s Graduate Council; oversees the plans of study for MFA students in the areas of Ceramics, Metal, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture; organizes and participates in cross-disciplinary critiques each semester; conducts graduate advising outreach/workshops; responds to exhibition opportunities and coordinates special projects offsite; and acts as Liaison between MFA students, faculty, the Museum and the Library in coordinating Thesis exhibitions and submission of Thesis materials in accordance with library requirements; may serve as an external evaluator to MFA candidates.

Active scholarship, committed teaching, and service on standing department and college committees is expected and required for tenure. Potential future leadership opportunities include the Art Department Chair position, which is filled by qualified tenured faculty on a three-year rotation basis.

Qualifications: MFA, MA, MS, PhD or other qualifying academic experience; significant and documented record of accomplishments through publication.

The applicant should possess broad knowledge of contemporary art and design discourse and demonstrate strengths in the field through published work, curatorial projects, written reviews and/or other evidence of relevant scholarship. The candidate must be able to develop topically relevant curricula that can serve the department as a whole, with particular strengths in community-building across the disciplines. The candidate must be able to teach, or advise and staff from internal faculty, the following courses: Graduate Art Seminar, Critical Dialogues, Sr. Art Seminar (BFA capstone course), CAPS BS/BA (capstone course), and develop thematic seminars that are responsive to current theoretical trends.
