Hawks Earn First Win
November 17th, 2008The SUNY New Paltz Ice Hawks notched their first win of the season this past Saturday, skating past SUNY Maritime by a final of 9-4. After a couple of early goals by Maritime, the Ice Hawks rebounded to take a 3-2 lead to close out the first period. Maritime tied the score right off the opening faceoff of the second period, and the Ice Hawks responded. With back to back power play goals by Senior Bryan Jones #97, and Senior Mike Carney #10 the Ice Hawks took a lead they would never give up. Carney lead the New Paltz attack scoring 4 goals and assisting on a tally from Sophmore Mike Maniaci #16. Captain Chris Ferry #19 (1G,1A) and Sophmore Scott Krenkel #11 (3A) continued their solid play, as well as Jones #97 (2G,1A) who was turned away on a penalty shot in the second period by a busy Maritime goaltender. The Ice Hawks registered 47 shots on goal in the game and certainly rewarded the loyal fans who were in attendance to an exciting afternoon of hockey. Senior Ken Hassler #8 also added an unassisted goal in what was truly an all around team effort. Come and see the Ice Hawks play in their final home game of the first semester this Friday night Nov. 21 at 9:15 pm at McCann Ice Arena, located at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, as the Hawks will attempt to make it two in a row versus the Southern Connecticut State University Bears.
Hawks Wings Clipped by Fordham
November 11th, 2008The New Paltz Ice Hawks lost to the Fordham University Rams on Saturday 10-5 in front of another strong crowd at the McAnn Ice Arena. Yet, the final score does not reflect the effort put forth by the Ice Hawks. The return of Sophmore Kevin Ryan #22 to the lineup began paying dividends, as he netted two goals in the contest. New Paltz also saw the Power Play come to life for the first time this season scoring three PP goals, after some wonderful puck movement which lead to tallies from Senior Scott Smith #23, Kevin Ryan #22, and Freshman Brian Zoll #14 who has now scored in back to back games. Captain Chris Ferry #19 added the first New Paltz goal of the game which came unassisted after an aggressive forecheck, and some hardwork behind the net by the New Paltz Captain. Yet this did not prove to be enough, and New Paltz could not overcome playing shorthanded as well as an early 7-2 defecit. Coach Tom Feaster added, “We are close, the effort is getting better but we need that fire to be there at the first drop of the puck, not after we are trailing by three or four goals.” The Ice Hawks have two remaining home games this semester, and two more on the road in December. “Although they have dug themselves a hole, this season is by no means over” added Feaster who has high hopes for the program, “our goal at the beginning of this season was to make the playoffs, and that is still the number one priority.” The Ice Hawks final home games will be this Sat. 11/15 vs. SUNY Maritime at 4:15 p.m. , and Fri. 11/21 vs. Southern Connecticut State University at 9:15 p.m.
Hawks Fall to Union College
November 11th, 2008The Ice Hawks of New Paltz lost another hard fought battle to Union College 7-3. Outshot nearly two to one (56-26), goaltender Aron Eldridge battled through a groin injury to finish the game dropping New Paltz to a 0-3-1 record. Trailing 6-1 going into the third period, New Paltz started out with a 5 minute major power play which saw them net goals from Sophmore Scott Krenkel #11, and Senior Rob Ward #32 who extended his goal scoring streak to four games cutting the lead to 6-3. Krenkel just missed another tally, along with a shot off the post from Senior Mike Carney #10 in a period where New Paltz only managed 8 shots on goal. Freshman Brian Zoll #14 scored his first goal as an Ice Hawk and the first goal of the game for New Paltz. Another bright note saw the return of Sophmore Kevin Ryan #22 to the lineup, who should add some much needed offense to the New Paltz attack.
Hawks Earn First Point of Season
October 31st, 2008Last Friday night the Ice Hawks earned their first point of the season, losing late in OT to the Community College of Morris by a score of 5-4. Despite being outshot 69-33 and getting off to slow start, the Hawks with goals from Captain Chris Ferry #19 and Bryan Jones #97, held a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. CCM answered with 3 goals in a 5 minute span taking away the Hawks momentum. With 4 minutes remaining in the period, senior Rob Ward #32 scored on a beautiful set up in front of the net from senior Mike Carney #10, cutting the CCM lead to 4-3 at the end of two periods. During the third period both teams really came out skating, with the Hawks taking the attack to CCM with an aggressive forecheck. Trailing 4-3 and playing shorthanded on 4 penalty calls in the third period, the Hawks rallied to tie the game when sophmore Scott Krenkel #11, broke through for his first goal of the season coming shorthanded and tying the game with 6 minutes to go. The action continued up and down the ice and extra time was needed to decide the outcome. With only 1:59 remaining in OT, the Hawks were whistled for a tripping penalty leaving them shorthanded for the remainder of the game. Battling 4 on 3, and with the hopes of a shootout looming, the Hawks would ultimately give up the game winning goal with only seconds left on the clock. After a tough call on the location of a faceoff, CCM won the last loose puck battle of the game working the puck to the point for a screen shot that beat Hawks goaltender Aron Eldridge #34 low to the glove side. Eldridge had 64 saves in the effort, many of which came on second and third chance scoring opportunities. Senior Joe Kreese #44, seperated his shoulder in the contest while delivering a thunderous hit in the first period. This seemed to help rally the Hawks who were trailing 1-0 at the time. The Hawks look to rebound against Union College Sat. November 1, at Messa Ice Arena in Schenectady.
Hawks Fall in Home Opener
October 23rd, 2008The Ice Hawks lost 4-3 to Yale University in last Saturday’s home opener at McCann Ice Arena in Poughkeepsie. In what was a hard fought battle on both sides, early penalties to the Hawks found them trailing 2-1 after the first period. Aron Eldridge #34, provided solid goaltending making 32 saves for New Paltz. Yet it was not enough to contain the Yale attack. Trailing 4-2 after a pair of goals from captain Chris Ferry #19, New Paltz rallied behind a raucous student body with a power play goal from assistant captain Scott Smith #23 midway through the third period cutting the score to 4-3. The goaltending of Yale was equal to the test though, fending off an aggressive New Paltz attack, leaving the Ice Hawks with an 0-2 record to start off a season that comes with high expectations for this program. The Ice Hawks next lace ‘em up this Friday 10/24 at 9:15 at the McCann Ice Arena, and look forward to the continued support from the loyal fans!
Hawks Lose Season Opener
October 23rd, 2008Last Friday the Ice Hawks lost their first meeting of the 2008-09 season to NJIT by a final score of 7-2. After a solid start to the first period, a couple of defensive zone breakdowns lead to a frustrating night for players and coach alike. The Hawks however kept working hard, and finished strong with a solid team effort in the third period despite trailing on the scoreboard. Rob Ward #32, and Ken Hassler #8 netted the goals for New Paltz who look to get back on track with upcoming games against Yale University and the Community College of Morris, NJ.
