SUNY New Paltz Student Help Desk

Ethernet Cable and Hub Loan Programs

Academic Computing at SUNY New Paltz makes it easy to get connected to the high-speed Internet access in your residence hall room. The Student Help Desk loans out 25-foot long Ethernet cords to connect your computer to the network. For tripled rooms, the Help Desk loans out 4-port hubs or 5-port switches so every student in the room can be connected at the same time in a room with only 2 jacks.

Identification Required

You must present your SUNY ID card to sign out any of our Ethernet equipment.

Ethernet Cables

Ethernet plug

Every student who lives in a campus residence hall is entitled to one 25-foot Ethernet cord to connect their computer to ResNet. These cords are long enough to reach any point in the room from the jack on the wall.

NEW THIS FALL: Ethernet cords will be distributed by your residence hall staff. You do not need to come to the Student Help Desk to pick up your cord.

To use the Ethernet cord, simply remove it from package, connect either end to the Ethernet port on your computer and connect the other end to the jack on the wall in your room. In most of the rooms, this is right under the windows. In College, Shango, Lenape and Esopus halls have the jacks in different locations. Check with your RA if you are not sure where to plug in your Ethernet cable.

The cord is yours to keep while you are a student at SUNY New Paltz living in one of the campus residence halls. You must return the cable to the Student Help Desk when you graduate, move off campus, transfer schools or otherwise stop living in a SUNY New Paltz residence hall. You may not keep the cable.

Ethernet Hubs

Ethernet hub

Each of the residence hall rooms have two high-speed Internet jacks in them to connect your computer to ResNet. If you are tripled, you can borrow an Ethernet hub from the Student Help Desk.

You must return the hub at the end of the Academic Year or when your third roommate moves out. Unlike the cables, you cannot keep the hub until you move off campus.

The help desk loans out two different type of hubs. Instructions for using each one are included in the box. If you have any questions on how to setup or use one of our hubs please contact us directly. Our office hours, office location, telephone number and e-mail address are on the home page of our web site.
