The college recycled more than 125 tons of materials in 2007. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television or operate a computer for three hours. Recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours.

You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you cut down your garbage by 10% — avoid heavily packaged products. The college purchased more than $125,000 green cleaning and related products in 2007. All college sanitary paper products, including toilet paper and paper towels are made of recycled materials.

Glass never wears out; it can be recycled forever. It takes 70 to 90 percent less energy to make recycled paper and it prevents the loss of forests worldwide. The college saves 180,000 gallons of water a year with installation of waterless toilet fixtures.

The average meal in the United States travels 1,200 miles from the farm to your plate. Buying locally will save fuel and keep money in your community. Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer when you're not using them will keep thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year out of the earth's atmosphere.
