In keeping with our Green Initiatives, the SUNY New Paltz Athletic and Wellness Center is currently having a photovoltaic system (solar panels) installed on its roof.
The solar panels are going to be tied into the schools electrical grid and will be used to help offset the power usage of the entire college. The system is expected to generate 71,956 kilowatts annually, which is about $8,000 in savings per year.
It’s costing the school approximately $291,000 to install the system. Installation is expected to be complete by September 2011.
The cost of this project is being off set by a grant from NYSERDA (New York State Energy Resource Development Authority) and ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act).
Other construction efforts on campus include the completion of renovations to Old Main and Crispell hall, which are being reopened in time for the Fall 2011 semester.
