New Paltz is Green!

Meet Augie

Canada Geese were a big issue on the SUNY New Paltz campus before Augie, a goose herding Border Collie, got hired. Augie joined the New Paltz family in 2011 after being rescued from a farm in Virginia. He has proven to be very cost-effective, eliminating the need to hire cleanup crews to follow the geese around.

Augie is very good at his job, and he loves what he does! He’s been specially trained to herd migrating Canada Geese away from our campus grounds without harming them. You may see Augie doing his job around campus with his trainer and handler, Mike Malloy. When he is not working, Augie is volunteering his time to the Elting Memorial Library’s Read to a Dog program, and socializing with students, staff, and faculty.

As a beloved member of our New Paltz community, Augie is now the star of his very own children’s book. Augie Goes to College, written by Rachel Rigolino ‘93g, SUNY New Paltz English instructor, and illustrated by Shaun Mrdjenovic, is about Augie’s journey to our campus. Rigolino’s inspiration for the book came after she “found Augie to be a delightful, people-centered dog, [who] embodies the true New Paltz spirit.” This book brings readers through the failures in Augie’s early sheep herding career, to the successes he has now found in chasing geese.
