Students apply and begin their studies in the Art Department under the title BS in Visual Arts. Students beyond first semester Freshmen are then eligible to enroll in Graphic Design classes.
Undergraduate students interested in pursuing the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design must present a portfolio for admittance to the Program. Opportunities for portfolio review take place every semester, just prior to pre-registration for the following semester. Applicants are expected to have completed 2-3 Graphic Design courses at New Paltz. Placement within the Program is determined by transcript and by level of accomplishment as evident in the portfolio.
