Graduate Programs and Certifications

As you complete your graduate studies, the School of Education will offer advisement on the certification process.  All applications for certification are now made through the Office of Teaching Initiatives (OTI) via the TEACH Online Services System.  For more information on certification, contact the Information Associate at 845-257-2790 or whitakec@newpaltz.edu

013R Reading/Literacy Specialization Leads to Professional Certification in Childhood (1-6). Please Note: The MS in Childhood Education program, grades 1-6 with a concentration in reading (013R), does not lead to certification as a Reading/Literacy Teacher. If you require certification to be a Reading/Literacy Teacher, you should select either the MS in Literacy Education program, Birth-Grad 6 (030A), or the MS in Literacy Education program, Grades 5-12 (030B).
013S Special Education Specialization Leads to Professional Certification in Childhood (1-6).  Please Note: The MS in Childhood Education program, grades 1-6 with a concentration in Special Education (013S), does not lead to certification as a Special Education Teacher. If you require certification to be Special Education Teacher, you should select either the MS in Special Education Childhood, grades 1-6 (060C), or the MS in Special Education Adolescence, grades 7-12.
Literacy Education:
029A Literacy Ed & Childhood Special Ed Initial Certification in Literacy B-6 and Initial Certification in Special Education 1-6.  Three years classroom teaching experience are required for Professional Certiification.
029B Literacy Ed & Adolescence Special Ed Initial Certification in Literacy 5-12 and Initial Certification in Special Education 7-12.  Three years classroom teaching experience are required for Professional Certification.
030A Literacy Education (Birth-6) Initial Certification in Literacy B-6. Three years of classroom teaching experience are required for Professional Certification.  Application for additional certification may be obtained through the New York Education Department.

059A Adolescence Special Ed & Literacy Ed Initial Certification in Special Ed 7-12 and Initial Certification in Literacy 5-12. Three years of classroom teaching experience are required for Professional Certification.
059B Childhood Special Ed & Literacy Ed Initial Certification in Special Ed 1-6 and Initial Certification in Literacy B-6.  Three years of classroom teaching experience are required for Professional Certification.
060A Special Education: Adolescence Professional Certification in Special Education 7-12. If your initial certificate is not for Special Education you can qualify for Dual Certification. At the present time we offer initial and professional Special Education certification under the following categories: English 7-12, Spanish 7-12, Biology 7-12, Earth Science 7-12, Mathematics 7-12 and Social Studies 7-12.

060E Special Education: Early Childhood Professional Certification in Special Education B-2

065 Second Language Education Professional Certification in Pre-K-12 ESOL or Bilingual Education
MSED Educational Administration
080A School Leadership
If utilized as part of the 60-hour Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) program, it can lead to NYS certification as either a School Building Leader (SBL), a School District Leader (SDL), or a School District Business Leader (SDBL). The SBL and SDL may be pursued jointly. The Master's Degree, by itself, will not lead to certification. This degree may not be used for permanent certification in elementary, secondary or special education.
MS Communication Disorders
090 Communication Disorders Initial/Professional Certification in Speech and Language Disorders. Initial upon graduation. Initial certification will be awarded upon graduation. Professional certification requires passing all NYS certification examinations.
MST Master of Science for Teachers
020A Childhood Education 1-6 Initial/Professional Certification in Childhood Education 1-6*
020B Early Childhood Birth-2 Initial/Professional Certification in Early Childhood Education Birth-2*
*Initial certification will be awarded upon graduation. Professional certification requires passing all NYS certification examinations.
MPS Master of Professional Studies
070 Humanistic/Multicultural Education Leads to professional certification for those seeking admission to the 36-credit teacher certification track in special subjects area: Family/Consumer Science, Health, Music, Physical Education and Technology Education. The 30-credit non-certification track does not lead to professional certification as a teacher in NYS.
MAT Master of Arts in Teaching
101A Biology Leads to initial and professional certification. Upon completion of the program, students will be recommended for initial certification. Students may apply for professional certification from the New York State Education department after they have completed three years satisfactory secondary experience in their discipline and obtained a satisfactory score on an additional New York State Examination: Assessment of Teaching Skills-Performance (ATS-P) (video).

MA Master of Arts
202 Biology Students holding initial certification in Biology or English may be able to use the MA program to fulfill the master's degree requirement for professional certification. Students should inquire about this possibility from NYS Dept of Education before applying to the MA program. This option will require students to apply for professional certification on their own via the TEACH Online Services System. SUNY New Paltz will only recommend students in the MSEd programs for professional certification.

CAS Certificate of Advanced Study
401A School Building Leader/School District Leader Leads to certification as a School Administrator and Supervisor K-12 (SAS) and /or School district Administrator (SDA). An internship is part of this program and is required for NYS certification.
