Graduate School

Steps for Applying: Method of Application Selection

Applying for graduate study at the State University of New York at New Paltz is a simple process. The Graduate School offers two different methods of application for its many programs: online application and the more traditional paper application process.

Our school uses a Self-Managed Application Process for both web applicants and paper applicants. Prospective students must collect all of the materials required by the department to which they are applying, and forward them to the Graduate School in ONE COMPLETE PACKET. Review the following methods of application and select the option that best suits your needs.

Online Application

Using the online application system, prospective students have access to their application twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The online application does not have to be filled out and submitted in one setting; rather, students are encouraged to take their time filling out the application and to e-mail gradschool@newpaltz.edu with any questions they may encounter during the application process before they finalize their application. Please keep in mind that many programs have specified deadlines for admission or may only accept students once per year. To ensure that your application will be reviewed, consult admission deadlines.

To conclude the online application process, students must submit their supplemental item packet which includes official transcripts, admissions essay, test scores and letters of recommendation before the admission deadline. All supplemental item packets received past the deadline or missing a required document will be considered incomplete and will be deferred to the following application cycle.

Please note that the online application requires payment of the $50 application fee by VISA or MasterCard and that the fee is non-refundable. If you are unable to pay by credit card, then you must fill out the paper application.

Online applications will be accepted according to the following schedule:

Fall/Summer Admission January 1 – May 15
Spring Admission August 1 – November 15

Paper Application

Applicants choosing to submit their application via our traditional paper application booklet will still be able to check their application status online.  Once a complete application packet is received and processed, the applicant will receive login information to check the status of his/her application online by mail or e-mail.

Paper applications must be submitted if the applicant:

  1. prefers to pay the application fee by check or money order
  2. is applying after May 15 or Nov 15 for a program with a *rolling admission deadline

Paper applications will be accepted according to the following schedule:
