Graduate School

Steps for Applying

Applying for graduate study at the State University of New York at New Paltz is a simple process. The Graduate School offers two different methods of application for its many programs: online application and the more traditional paper application process.

Our school uses a Self-Managed Application Process for both web applicants and paper applicants. Prospective students must collect all of the materials required by the department to which they are applying, and forward them to the Graduate School in ONE complete packet. The following steps will guide you to successfully complete your admissions process.

Prospective international students for whom English is not the native language are required to achieve an acceptable score on the TOEFL (typically a minimum of 550 for the paper-based, 213 for the computer based and a 80 for the internet based exam). Please note some individual departments set their own criteria for acceptable scores.

Program Selection and Admission Requirements

In regards to selecting a program, ultimately the decision stems from an applicant's interests, experience and goals. Many of our graduate students are first time-degree seekers, while others may have made career changes.
