I. Announcements:
Due to the limited time (1 hr.) for meetings, members were reminded to access Blackboard for further discussion of issues brought before the committee. Login protocol was reviewed.
Prioritizing of requests for review from Advising Office discussed. The S/U Policy Proposal will be the next item addressed following the scheduled discussion of the GE III Student-Option Proposal next on.
II. General Education III Student Option Proposal
Discussion of the proposal ensued regarding concerns about cohorts (how many students would this effect), tracking, course substitutions, and scheduling. Support was voiced for student choice, however would we as a faculty and institution be able to deliver services that would truly provide informed choice for students since it would be very complicated. Memo from Gerald Benjamin to Provost Lavallee outlining concerns of entertaining this proposal was shared. Several of these echoed the concerns of the Academic Affairs Committee. A student perspective shared with the committee highlighted how overwhelming GE requirements in general can be for students, so the adding choice of which GE requirement to follow may be too much choice.
Robin Smith moved that students stay under the General Education (GE) requirements in place when they are accepted for matriculation. Motion seconded by Cindy McCormick. Motion carried (12 in favor, 1 opposed).
Ann Minnick requested that the next proposal reviewed by the committee be the S/U Policy followed by the Basic Algebra Graduation Requirement Proposal. Immediately following these proposals the 2004-2005 academic calendar will be reviewed.
Meeting adjourned at12:26 p.m. Leslie Couse moved, seconded by David Blankenship. Next meeting is scheduled for February 11th from 11:30-12:25 p.m. in Humanities 113.
Respectfully submitted,
Leslie J. Couse (Elementary Education)
