Geology Story

Winter Break Activities

01/28/2011

Winter Break is a time for faculty and students to switch gears from the academic semesters, catch up on research, writing, and, we hope, find some time to recreate.

Over Winter Break Senior Geology major Allison Plattsky worked on on her research project looking at the fossil contents of a core from the wetland at the south end of Seneca Lake. Her work is part of a multi-part evaluation of this core with her research advisor Dr. Rayburn, and a team from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The overall project is trying to separate out the effects of post-glacial isostatic rebound and climate change from pre-historic lake level changes in New York's Finger Lakes. Allison will be presenting her work at the Geological Society of America meeting in Pittsburgh in March.

The Spring Geological Society of America Meeting will be exciting one for New Paltz, along with Allison Plattsky's presentation, Drs. Rayburn, Bartholomew, Haselton (Biology), and Vollmer will be presenting research along with five student researchers, Emily Davis, Colin Carey, Kathleen Hansen, Thomas Schramm (Geology alumnus), and Lauren Perry (Biology).
