Geology Students Study Evidence for Ordovician Mountains
09/16/2008
Students in the Geology Field Methods course meet on Friday afternoons to learn field techniques and to apply them to the study of local outcrops. The current project involves the interpretation of primary and secondary structures in a series of Ordovician strata that were deformed in the Taconic mountain building event. This event, known to geologists as an "orogeny", took place approximately 470 million years ago when a volcanic arc collided with the ancient North American continent.
