Geology Student Attends Pleistocene Field Trip

09/02/2008

New Paltz Geology major Linda Amato took part in the weekend long Northeastern Friends of the Pleistocene professional field trip led out of Glens Falls, New York at the end of May. This annual field trip brings together professional geomorphologists, Quaternary geologists, and archaeologists from across the northeastern US and Canada to investigate and discuss important geological exposures relating to earth surface processes, climate change, and human habitation during the last 2 million years.  The theme of this year's field trip was "Glacial Geology of the Northern Hudson-Southern Champlain Lowlands", which provided Linda with important background information for her research project next semester. Linda, under the guidance of Dr. Rayburn, will be measuring and evaluating an outcrop of glacial age lake clays north of Albany to try to evaluate how long ago they were deposited which will help to determine the age and rate of deglaciation of the Hudson Valley.
