Outlook Express Setup
Outlook Express comes with Windows 2000 and XP, so there is no need for any installation. If you need help finding the program please see the image below. It can be found on the Start Menu under All Programs.
Step 1: Open Outlook Express, and click on the Tools button at the top, and then select Accounts…
Step 2: In this window, to the left, click on Add, then click Mail. (Note: You may see items in the Internet Accounts window, such as other e-mail accounts (from home, other schools, etc. Disregard these; they won’t affect the setup for the New Paltz e-mail)
Step 3: Type your full name in Internet Connection Wizard window, then click Next
Step 4: Type your e-mail address here. This address is your firstname.lastname@example.org. Your username is the first 7 letters of your last name, followed by your first initial. After this, click Next
Step 5: Change “My incoming mail server is a ______ server” to IMAP. For Incoming mail server, enter imap.newpaltz.edu and for outgoing mail (SMTP) server, enter smtp.newpaltz.edu. Then click Next
Step 6: Enter your username and password (If you have never changed your password it is the lower case letter s followed by the last 6 digits of your social security number.) Make sure you do not check the box where it says “Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)”
Then click Next again.
Step 7: Click on Finish on the next window that comes up.
Step 8: Click Close on the following window. Your e-mail account is now setup to access the SUNY New Paltz e-mail servers
In order to be able to send e-mail with Outlook Express, you MUST specify that your outgoing server requires authentication!
To do this, after setting up your account in Outlook Express, you must change a few preferences.
- Open Outlook Express
- Click on Tools at the top
- Choose accounts
- Click on the e-mail account you’ve setup and click properties on the right
- Click on the Server tab at the top
- Make sure “My server requires authentication” is selected (as shown in the image below)
