Research/Creative Activity

Professor Aldana's current research focuses on music and cultural identity in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, especially on Champeta music from the Northern coast of Colombia, to examine how this musical genre serves as a powerful vehicle of political organization and the articulation of an active Afro identity in the Colombian Caribbean. Her most recent work explores narratives by displaced Afrodescendant women in Colombia to analyze how these texts offer particular elements that define them as Afro testimonios.
