FYI: The First-Year Initiative

The FYI Program is a living/learning community. FYI provides an opportunity to live in a residence hall with classmates who take two courses in common during each semester of their first year. Students who completed FYI in previous years said they loved it because it offered them these benefits:

  • Living with other new students who are their classmates in some courses
  • Developing a special rapport with instructors and other students
  • Availability of informal study groups without leaving the residence hall
  • Having a peer advisor, known as a "Resident Mentor," right in the hall
  • Conveniently located evening workshops facilitated by faculty and staff
  • Maximized development of effective academic skills
  • A one-day field trip to the university's Outdoor Education Center
  • Needing to choose only a few courses to round out class schedules
  • Lasting friendships

If you have any specific questions about FYI, please e-mail Robin Cohen-LaValle, the Associate Dean of Students at cohenr@newpaltz.edu or call her at (845) 257-3088.
